Things you need to know:
- Height
- Weight
- Experience Level
- Where you will be riding
- Riding Style (potentially what you will get into, Ie. Waves, Freeride, Freestyle etc.)
How to choose a kiteboard:
Choosing a kiteboard can be very difficult and confusing, but it doesn't have to be! Because of the technology and equipment progression in the last few years its hard to find a bad board out there. Focus more on the conditions you will be riding in, your weight, height and ability when choosing your board.
For 90% of riders a beginner board will be around 145cm x 44cm (or bigger) This will allow enough surface area and buoyancy for getting your first water starts and getting upwind without feeling like you are trying to turn a boat.
You have three choices when choosing your first board. You either go with the slightly larger board so you pick up the basics faster but then risk later growing out of the board.
The "In between board" - Approx 138cm x 40ish... You still have many of the benefits of the larger board, without the slower nature. This style of board will get you going reasonably fast but feel less sluggish once you have mastered the basics.
The All rounder - Approx 134cm x 40 This is a super popular size for a big range of riders who want good performance without riding around on a tiny board which will make landing and sticking new tricks harder.
It is also worth bearing in mind if you have been involved in other board or wind sports such as snowboarding, windsurfing, wakeboarding or surfing that you may pick up kitesurfing slightly fast than others once you have honed your kite control.
How to choose a kitesurfing kite:
When choosing your kite or quiver of kites it is worth considering what you will be doing in 6months to a year once your progression is well underway.
Cost generally plays a big part to play when choosing your equipment and because of this it is common for riders to buy one kite, a board, a harness and a wetsuit as an entry level package. This is a good way to start but you generally end up with an "all round" kite size that maynot fit into a broader quiver later on.
Ie. A 9m and 13m is broad quiver for a large wind range.
If you bought just an 11m to get you started, it would be very close with a lot of overlap to other kites you may potentially add to your quiver.
Popular quivers are 7, 9, 13 (+/-m) Depending on where your local spot is, and the general wind stats you may want to dedicate more money to a light or high wind kite if it will be used more commonly. For a rough idea of some windranges check out the chart below. Based on a beginner kite from Ozone Kites.
Green/Beginners = Should start kiting in light winds only.
Green/Beginners = Should start kiting in light winds only.
Blue/Advanced = Riders are well powered up.
Yellow/Experts = Are perfectly powered.
Orange/Experts = Fully powered but still smiling.
Red/Heavier Professionals Only.
How to choose a kite harness:
Harnesses are a personal choice as it is all about comfort. There are only two rear choices for kite harnesses. Seat harnesses and waist harnesses. Seat harnesses are good for certain type of body types and for those wanting a lower centre of gravity for the hook position. Waist harnesses give much more freedom when kiting and in personal opinion - are the bee's knees.
How to choose a wetsuit for kitesurfing:
Ideally you want to have 2 wetsuits for kitesurfing. A winter steamer (Full suit 5/4/3mm) and a shorty or long arm shorty for use most of the time in the Uk. (3/2mm)
We stock a variety of Mystic wetsuits. 1. We all use these ourselves 2. They are kite/wake/windsurf specific so the flex patterns, materials and some of the features are great for kiting. They are high quality and come out with some great colourways!
What else do I need? Other things to consider when you are learning to kite which could be useful: Wind meter, sand bag, windsock/flag, friends.
If you are interested in more than one kite or a kite / board combo simply give us a call on 01793 523255 or email us using the email us function at the top of the page.
